The Verdict

THE SHORT READ…

The Patagonia Stormstride Pants are an excellent pair of pants that will last you a good few seasons, which is a relief as at £400 you’d expect quality and, to be fair, that’s exactly what you get.

Great fit and a good stretch in the fabric makes the Stormstride a great pair of touring pants.

THE LONG READ …

Just like the Patagonia Stormstride Jacket, the Pants are the quality that you’d expect from a brand like Patagonia, coming in a mellow greyish blue, a bright blue or bright rust the three colours should work with most tops, and of course make a matching set in complimentary colours with the Stormstride Jacket.

The Stormstride Pants are made from a non-insulated 3 layer fabric with just the right amount of stretch that you need while in the skin track. The Stretchy, 3-layer H2No™ Performance Standard shell fabric is both waterproof and breathable, and has a soft recycled polyester knit interior backer that helps with moisture wicking, but you shouldn’t get too hot as the waist to knee vents will keep you cool once opened. The vents have a waterproof zip, and a small but functional zip string.

The two front pockets are of a good size and stop high enough above the knee not to be annoying when you have bits and bobs in them. The right hand side pocket has an internal elasticated sheath that is perfect for your transceiver, or all but the biggest phone, and there’s a small loop that you can attach the cord from your transceiver to, perfect as long as you’re right handed.

The waist sits high on the hips, so you won’t get snow up your back unless you take a long slide on your backside, there is external belt loops but the internal velcro adjustments works really well, pulling the pants super tight around your waist.

The internal base of the Stormstride Pants will fit over your boots with ease, even if you have side boa fastenings, if not, there’s a popper and velcro fastenings that opens the internal sleeve super wide.

The external cuffs have a zip that allows you to open up the cuffs by about 5cm, and there’s a popper in the centre of the extension flap but I can’t imagine you’ll need to use it and would be more likely to use one of the other two poppers that will hold the cuff tight to your boot. I personally like my pant cuffs to sit snug on my boots while skinning so they don’t rub together on each leg.

SUMMARY…

A super pair of lightweight touring pants, 570g in medium, that are just as good on the way up as down.

Simple and functional, just how I like it.
