The Verdict
THE SHORT READ…
Stance make good socks! I’ve used their snow socks over multiple seasons now, and, as long as you don’t wash them too hot, they won’t let you down.
The Mid Wool Snow Sock is a staple and should be in most snowboarders winter sock draw, the Ultra Light Wool Snow Sock is only really suited to spring days, or deep winter for those who have warm high density liners.
Both the Mid and Ultra Light will fit your foot without bunching up, stay up on your shins, and won’t slide around inside your boots. They are a great sock, and, while not cheap, at least the price isn’t eye-watering.
THE LONG READ …
The Stance Mid Wool Snow Socks come in seven colours, one of which looks like a pair of West Ham United socks, but, regardless of colour, the Mid Wool Snow Socks are well cushioned, good and warm.
The foot area is well shaped with an obvious left and right fitting. Fortunately for the stupid, like me, there’s a big R and L on them.
I’ve used the Mid Wool in a medium which is designed to fit a UK mens 5.5 to 8 foot, womens 6 to 8.5. I’m a size UK mens 8 and they fit me really nicely, without any loose bunching around my foot, and stay up well without feeling too tight around my calfs, even when walking the dog in a loose pair of wellie boots.
The Mid Wool are made of a 38% nylon, 31% merino wool, 29% polyester and 2% elastane combination.
The Ultra Light Wool Snow Socks are as you’d expect thinner, and defo best suited to warm days in the skin track, or looping the lifts on a spring day.
As with before, there’s an obvious left and right, and again I tested the Medium mens UK 5.5 to 8, womens 6 to 8.5 but, unlike the Mid Wool Snow, they felt really tight, especially around the calf, it must be the 60% nylon, 36% merino wool, 4% elastane combo (a higher nylon % than the Mid wool Snow) that makes them a super snug fit, I washed them on a 30 deg cycle, and they didn’t shrink at all so buying the right size is important if you’re on the higher end of the Medium sizing I’d go for the large.
I’ve worn the Ultra Light a lot over the last few weeks and they show no sign of wear, so I’m not worried about the thinness leading to them wearing out at the heel quickly, and believe them to have the durability and quality you’d expect from a Stance snow sock.
SUMMARY…
I like both socks and can see there’s a use for both if you do a lot of boarding. If you only ride deep winter I’d go for the Mid Wool Snow, but, if you hope to ride long into the spring, (or like a ski sock when walking the dog…) then a pair of Ultra Light Snow is a great addition to your sock draw.
